Charles enlisted in Co. E, 31st Maine, Infantry, 11 Mar 1864 and was mustered in the same day. He was a Corporal when he was Mustered Out, 15 Jul 1865. The Regiment left Maine 18 April 1864 and was attached to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, IX Corps, Army of the Potomac. The 31st commenced active campaigning on 4 May and took its 1st casualties 2 days later. By 12 June it was engaged in the Siege of Petersburg, VA until the end of the War.

William registered for the WW1 draft 5 Jun 1917 and sailed to France, May 1918 with the 320th Ambulance Co, 305th Sanitary Train, 80th Division aboard the "Siboney" After the end of the War he sailed from Brest, France 20 May 1919 and arrived in Hoboken, NJ on 31 May 1919.
