'''281. NATHANIEL 4 DUNHAM''' (Joseph 3,2 John 1), was born before 1721, a son of Joseph 3 and Bethia (Chase) Dunham.[1] This is the Nathaniel Dunham known as Nathaniel 1st of Norton, Bristol, MA and Mansfield, Bristol, MA. We do not have a death date or place for this Nathaniel 4 Dunham 1st. There was a Nathaniel Dunham who died in Mansfield, 14 March 1796., but that date is for Nathaniel Dunham, Jr. [2]

While we do not have an exact birth or death date for Nathaniel Dunham 1st of Norton he would have been born before Nathaniel 5 Dunham, Jr. son of Nathaniel 4,3, Joseph 2 John 1 Dunham). This Nathaniel 5 Dunham, Jr. was born in Norton 20 June 1722. [3] Also see TAG Vol. 62 p. 15 for discussion by Dr. David Green and the author of the article, Rosemari Finter of the fact that “if Nathaniel Dunhan 1st was older than Nathaniel Jr. – and I’m sure that he was, Gratia Dunham Mahony, it follows that Nathaniel 1st was born before 1722.” [4]

We know from land records that Joseph 3 Dunham, house carpenter, was living in Norton between about 1711/12 to about 1724 when he is living in Edgartown. It is likely that several of his children were born in Norton. Please refer to the narrative under #48. Joseph 3 Dunham, father of Nathaniel 4 Dunham 1st. If Nathaniel 4 Dunham 1st was born in Norton before 1722, then it is logical that he would be called Nathaniel Dunham 1st of Norton.

Nathaniel Dunham 1st married (probably as his second wife), and probably in Raynham (given on Norton Vital Records as Nathaniel Dunham 1st intent 21 December 1757 m. 6 January 1757/8 Esther Partridge of Raynham. [5] They resided in that part of Norton which became the district of Mansfield, Ma. in 1770, and the town of Mansfield Ma. in 1775.

Esther (Partridge) Dunham died 15 May 1807 age 77 years and is buried in Brier Cemetery, Savoy, Berkshire County Massachusetts. [6]
Nathaniel Dunham 1st would have been between 36 and 42 years old at the time of his marriage to Esther Partridge, thus we should consider that he may have had an earlier (unknown) wife and may even have had children by her.

This is the Nathaniel referred to as Nathaniel 1st of Mansfield.
There were four children from this marriage, (only three are given in TAG 62:18) [7]
The regiment left Troy, 30 August 1862, and proceeded by rail to Martinsburg, Virginia, and a few days later it marched to and was engaged in the Battle of Harpers Ferry. A few of its number were killed and wounded during this battle, and the regiment together with the rest of the garrison, totaling over 11,500 men, surrendered to the Confederates on 15 September 1862. With the other captured troops, the men were sent under parole to Camp Douglas, Chicago, to remain there while awaiting exchange, which was effected 22 November.
:::::::The regiment was then ordered back to Virginia, where it was attached to Maj. Gen. Silas Casey's Division, in the defenses of Washington at Maryland Heights, and encamped at Centreville until 24 June 1863, when it joined the Second Corps, Army of the Potomac, and marched away to Gettysburg. Under command of Colonel Levin Crandall, the 125th fought at Gettysburg where it lost 139 killed and wounded. The regiment was actively engaged at Auburn and Bristoe Station in October, losing 36 men in those battles. Colonel Crandall was temporarily absent on recruiting service, and Lieut. Col. Aaron B. Myer was in command at the battle of the Wilderness. A few days later, at Spotsylvania, the regiment was in the thick of the fight, forming part of a storming column that moved against the enemy's works at daybreak on 12 May 1864. With 3 kids my father was released from the service, but had to work at Treasure Island, San Francisco to make enough money for the train trip home.
3.3 '''NATHANIEL-3 DUNHAM''', (Thomas-2, John-1); b. probably in Sheepscott, Lincoln, ME, abt. 1666; d. Hebron, Tolland, CT, 12 May 1751, age 85; m. Wrentham, Norfolk, MA by 1689, '''Mary Unknown'''.[3] She was b. abt 1669; d. Hebron, 5 Feb 1756/7. They are both buried in Gilead Cemetery, Hebron, Find a Grave Memorials [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/7524368 7524368], photo and [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/7524395 7524395], photo.

His father, Mr. Thomas-2 Dunham, was witness to a deed which was recorded 24 May 1666 for the sale of land in Sheepscott, Maine. Thus it is likely that Nathaniel was born there and that he was living with his family in Sheepscott prior to King Philip’s War in 1675. Nathaniel would have been about 11 years old during that horrible time. In 1677 Thomas Dunham was in Rye where he became the first settled minister of that community. Nathaniel would still have been living with the family and would have been about 12 years old. We can surmise that Nathaniel lived in Rye until at least 1684 when his father moved to Bedford. Thus Nathaniel would have been age 19 years in 1684. We do not know if Nathaniel moved to Bedford with his parents but it is likely that he remained in Rye. In 1689 he inherited a “Plain lot” and also a 12 acre lot and a
meadow lot in Rye.

As a young man, aged about 24 years, who owned property Nathaniel would have been ready to find a wife. We know that he married a woman named Mary, but we do not know her surname. It would be logical to look for her among the early families of Rye, but she could have come from one of the neighboring communities of Fairfield, Stamford or Bedford. It is also intriguing to learn why Nathaniel and Mary settled in the newly formed town of Wrentham, Massachusetts. Wrentham was formed from Dedham, Massachusetts and suffered greatly during King Philip’s War. By the early 1680s families were beginning to move back into Wrentham. Nathaniel and Mary Dunham must have moved there by early 1690.

He was living 22 Feb. 1723/4 in Connecticut, as his brother Isaac’s bequest of £90 was to be paid in money of that colony.

:::This John-4 Dunham and his likely son Nathaniel-5 Dunham who migrated to Clermont County, Ohio, have been very difficult to place within the family genealogy. At one time I had considered that this John-4 was a son of one of the illegitimate children of David-3 Dunham. I had also considered that he may have been a son of David-3 and his wife Mary (Ilsley) Dunham. I now (2023) believe that he was a son of Nathaniel-3 and Joanna (Thornell) Dunham. The reasons for this will be discussed under Nathaniel-5 Dunham who we can locate in Scotch Plains, Union, NJ and Somerset Co., NJ.
“Possibly there was a son Daniel, born about 1710-1715, as one of the earliest appointments in the Elizabethtown district in 1739 was that of Constable Daniel Dunham, who must have been of full age at the time of his commission, which would bring his birth about 1715”. [3]
22. '''LEWIS 4 DUNHAM''' (David-3, Jonathan-2 Dunham alias Singletary, Richard-1 Singletary) b. in Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ say 1706-7; d. before 2 Feb. 1750 when Mary Dunham of Woodbridge called herself “Widow”.

The Dunham family of Woodbridge, New Jersey is very confusing and has been difficult to put together due to the fact that many records were destroyed during the Revolutionary War period.
I have worked for years to compile this family and I’m certain that there are still errors in it. However, in order to get the known facts assembled so that others may be able to add information, I have placed Lewis Dunham here.

We do not know for certain if Lewis was the father of the following 4 children named in the will of Mary (Dennis) Dunham; but I believe it is possible for the following reason. The given name, Lewis, was used by several descendants of David-3 Dunham to the extent that it had to have special meaning within that family. We know for certain that Lewis was the name given to the youngest son of (unknown, but possibly Lewis) and Mary (Dennis) Dunham.

::The will of Mary Dunham, given below, does not name her children. However these children are named in the administration of that will, which occurred over 10 years later. From: New Jersey Colonial Documents, Calendar of Wills Page 155, Lib. E p. 480:

::::''1750, Feb. 2. Dunham, Mary, of Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., Widow''
::::''Int, Adm’r Jonathan Dennis, her father, of Woodbridge, Yeoman,''
::::''Reuben Porter, of Woodbridge, Yeoman, fellow bondsman.''

::::''From the administration of the will of Mary (Dennis) Dunham:''
::::''Mary Dunham; of Woodbridge, Middlesex New Jersey''
::::''Inv: 74:18:8. By Timothy Bloomfield, Filed Sept. 12, 1760. . .Feb. 23, 1761.''
::::''Account by Jonathan Dennes, Dec’d. The Administrator,''
::::''signed by Robert Dennes, who charges 26:0:0.''

::::''For support, of Lewis Donham, 3 years 9 Months old, when his mother died 12:0''
::::''For Jonathan’s schooling, 2 quarters, and nothing for Phoebe Donham''.

::Analysis of Inventory/AccountAdministration of Mary Dunham of Woodbridge, by Gratia Dunham Mahony:
::::Any children over the age of 14 did not need to have a court appointed guardian, so while Robert Dennes paid for support of Racheal, Lewis, Jonathan, and Phoebe, he does not seem to be called “guardian” of these four children.

::Mary (Dennis) Dunham died before 2 Feb. 1750, so if we analyze the ages of the children in the 12 Sept. 1760 account it looks like:
::::Phoebe Donham (for whom nothing was paid) was probably over age 14, so she was probably born say 1735-36.
::::Jonathan Donham received “2 quarters of schooling” so he was probably almost 14 when his mother died and was probably born about 1736.
::::Racheal Donham was age 11 yrs. 9 months old when her mother died, so she was born about April-May of 1738, died before 23 February 1761.
::::Lewis Donham was 3 yrs. 9 mos. old when his mother died so he was born April-May 1746.

----

:::Children of (probably) Lewis 4 and Mary (Dennis) Dunham:

:::::	     i.  Phoebe 5 Dunham b. say 1735-6
:::::   42. ii.  Jonathan 5 Dunham b. abt. 1736
:::::	   iii.  Racheal 5 Dunham b. abt. 1738
:::::   43. iv.  Lewis 5 Dunham b. abt. 1746
