5. OBADIAH-5 DUNHAM (Jabez-4, Nathaniel-3, Thomas-2, John-1), was b. in Hebron, Tolland, CT, 31 Mar 1730; d. in Middlefield, Otsego, NY, 17 Feb 1813; m. in Hebron, 22 Nov 1754, Lucy Gillett, dau. of Joel Gillett and Mary Foote. She was b. in Windsor, Hartford, CT, 18 Feb 1740; d. 18 Feb 1830. Both Obadiah and Lucy were bur. in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown, Otsego, NY. Obadiah was a doctor.

Obadiah had been a garrison soldier at Fort Massachusetts (now in Williamstown, Berkshire, MA) during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). He and several other garrison soldiers from Fort Massachusetts and Fort Hoosac were early proprietors at Pownal, Bennington, VT, moving there in 1763. He fought in the Revolutionary War (1775-1783); and was one of the heroes of battle of Bennington. On September 24, 1776, he was sent as delegate to Dorset, Bennington, Vt. to organize Vermont as a state. He served as a private from May 19 to June 28, 1779, in Capt. Thomas Sawyer's company of militia raised for the defense of the northern frontiers of the United States, and received £2.19.8. He also served as a private for 67 days from August 16, 1780, in Capt. Eli Noble's company; Major Eben Allen's Detachment, and received £5.3.4 and served as a private for two days in July 1781, under the same command, "as marcher to Saratoga", NY, in the alarm, in Pownal, Bennington, VT. He served as justice of peace at Pownal, Vt. for 20 years. In 1785 he and the family (Mehitabel, Abner, Lucy) moved to the hamlet of Bowerstown in Middlefield, just Southeast of Cooperstown. He was overseer of the poor when the town of Middlefield was established in 1797.

Benjamin: Military Service 191,424,425,426,427,428, Green Mountain Boy, Herricks Rangers of Vermont, rank of private from Vermont, 1775-1778 :::::::During the Revolutionary War Benjamin was a member of the troop from Pownal, under the command of Captain Samuel Wright and Lt. William Wheeler. At Castleton, Ethan Allen took command of the troop to march on Ft Ticonderoga in 1775. Benjamin participated in Ethan Allen’s march to Canada under Seth Warner and was a member of the rangers under Col Herrick. He also took part in the battles of Saratoga, Bemis Heights, & Bennington along with Quebec, Ft Ticonderoga and Crown Point.

Wilderness, VA. He was a mechanic. He enlisted in Company A, New York 125th Infantry Regiment on 27 Aug 1862. Was captured in action September 6, 1862 and paroled September 16, 1862 at Harpers Ferry, VA. Promoted to Full 1st Sergeant on 15 Mar 1863. Was wounded at Gettysburg, PA in December 1863. Killed in action on 06 May 1864 during Battle of the Wilderness, VA.

The 125th regiment was organized at Troy and there mustered in the service of the United States for three years 27–29 August 1862. The regiment left Troy, 30 August 1862, and proceeded by rail to Martinsburg, Virginia, and a few days later it marched to and was engaged in the Battle of Harpers Ferry. A few of its number were killed and wounded during this battle, and the regiment together with the rest of the garrison, totaling over 11,500 men, surrendered to the Confederates on 15 September 1862. With the other captured troops, the men were sent under parole to Camp Douglas, Chicago, to remain there while awaiting exchange, which was effected 22 November. The regiment was then ordered back to Virginia, where it was attached to Maj. Gen. Silas Casey's Division, in the defenses of Washington at Maryland Heights, and encamped at Centreville until 24 June 1863, when it joined the Second Corps, Army of the Potomac, and marched away to Gettysburg. Under command of Colonel Levin Crandall, the 125th fought at Gettysburg where it lost 139 killed and wounded. The regiment was actively engaged at Auburn and Bristoe Station in October, losing 36 men in those battles. Colonel Crandall was temporarily absent on recruiting service, and Lieut. Col. Aaron B. Myer was in command at the battle of the Wilderness. A few days later, at Spotsylvania, the regiment was in the thick of the fight, forming part of a storming column that moved against the enemy's works at daybreak on 12 May 1864. In the two battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, the 125th lost 118 in killed and wounded.

Selectman of Shaftsbury, VT for 15 years; deacon of Baptist Church for 30 years. Was a prolific vegetable gardener. He and Hazel owned and lived in the Isaiah Mattison house (23 room brick colonial built in 1826 including 100 acres of land) 16 in Shaftsbury for 33 years ending about 1937. He married Hazel Rockwood, 11-23-1910 in Bennington, VT, b. 1891, d. 1957. Children:

11. Jesse Elmer 11 (Jesse Loomis 10 Herbert Stanley 9 Dewey Charles 8 Alfred 7 Obadiah 6 Obadiah 5 Jabez 4 Nathaniel 3 Thomas 2 John 1 ) Dunham, b. 12-16-1919, d. 02-02-1982. He was a Civil Engineer, graduate of RPI in Troy, NY in 1940 and Chief Engineer for the State Department Agency for International Development in Bogota, Colombia and Saigon back in the 60's and Chef Engineer for CIA in the 70's. After graduation went to work with the Civil Aviation Administration as a Civil Engineer and certified pilot in charge of inspecting airports throughout New York State. He was drafted either late 1944 or early 45 and completed basic training with the Navy at Great Lakes, Illinois in April, 1945. He was shipped out by train to San Francisco presumably for the invasion of Japan but in the interim Congress had passed a bill that anyone with 2 or more kids was exempt from the draft. With 3 kids my father was released from the service but had to work at Treasure Island in San Francisco to make enough money for the train trip home. He married Lorna Morrow, 11-16-1940 in Maplecrest, NY. Children:
