30. JONATHAN-4 DUNHAM (Benjamin-3 Dunham, Jonathan-2 Dunham alias Singletary, Richard-1 Singletary) born in Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ, 7 January 1710/11, [1] died in Woodbridge, 21 September 1748. [2] He married about 1733, MARY SMITH, [3] daughter of Shubael-3 and Prudence (Fitz Randolph) Smith. [This Smith line was Shubael-3, Samuel-2 (and Esther-3 Dunham) John-1 Smith; and the Fitz Randolph line was Prudence-4, Samuel-3, Nathaniel-2, Edward-1 Fitz Randolph.] (see under S-D-9-Esther-3 [S-D-9-Esther-3] Dunham). Mary Smith was born 27 December 1716/17, died in 1791. [4]

Will abstract of Jonathan 4 Dunham:

“1747-8, Jan. 31. Dunham, Jonathan, of Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., yeoman; will of.

Wife, Mary Dunham. Six children, under 15 years of age; Benjamin, only child mentioned by name. Bond of Gershom Moore. Real and personal estate.

Executors—friends Robert FitzRandolph, Charles March (Marsh?), David Donham, Jun’r.

Proved Jan. 3, 1748. Lib. E, p. 237. 1748, Jan. 25.

The will of Mary (Smith) Dunham was dated 11 November 1784, proved 15 October 1791. [N.J. Archives 37:116] In in she leaves to son Asher the great Bible and bed quilt; his wife, Susannah 1 pair of pillow cases. Son William’s wife (not named) 1 pair of pillow cases. She leaves various items to her daughter Hannah Wright, son-in-law William Wright’s daughter Elizabeth; daughter Elizabeth Dunham. Then she leaves “my children, Elizabeth, Samuel, Asher and William, each 1/5 part of residue”. She leaves the other 1/5 part to her grandchildren, Joseph, David and Ann Alstone (sic) children of Hannah Wright. She then states “son Samuel is absent from home; should he not return in 10 years, his son Jacob to have £10 when 21”. [6]

Mary Smith’s father Shubael-3 Smith was a Quaker and Mary (Smith) Dunham was also Quaker. From the book "Woodbridge and Vicinity" by Rev. Joseph W. Dally p. 221 under Quaker History "Some time in February (the year was 1780) Compton carried off Mary Dunham's tea table for unpaid war tax. (Mary Dunham, widow of Jonathan Dunham and daughter of Shubael Smith was being fined under the existing laws against non-combatants.)

iii. Benjamin-5 Donham b. 17 March 1738; d. 18 June 1765 age 26 years; (only child named in will of father 31 Jan. 1747/8) (not named in will of mother 11 Nov. 1784)

Benjamin-5 had two children who died young: [7]

i. Jonathan-6 b. about 1763; d. 12-27-1766, age 2 yrs.

ii. Benjamin-6 b. about 1765; d. 8-10-1766, age 9 mos.

iv. Elizabeth-5 Donham b. 27 February 1740; (named in will of mother 11 Nov. 1784)

Elizabeth’s will dated 15 Jan. 1812, probated 23 Jan. 1812 names:

Neice-Mary Lew, wife of William Tichenor & her 2 children (minors), Eliza Ann and Mary Jane Tichenor.

Natural son Jeremiah Gach if he shall be located within 7 yrs.
