LINE OF DEACON JOHN DUNHAM OF PLYMOUTH

FOURTH GENERATION IN AMERICA

48. DANIEL 4 DUNHAM (Daniel 3 Joseph 2 John 1), b. in Newport, Newport, RI, 3 August 1712; d. in Great Barrington, Berkshire, MA, January 1796; Buried at Newport. Daniel m. 1 Ann Wiles/Wyles who was b. in 1710 and died soon after the marriage. Daniel m. 2 in Newport, 1 January 1737, Abigail Hart. He m. 3 16 October 1766 Ann (Amy) Murphy.

Daniel was a Captain in the Continental Army of Rhode Island, and was in the 1745 expedition to Louisbourg and Crown Point. He was also a Colonel in the Rhode Island Militia from 1770-1774. He lived in Newport until about 1778 when he moved to Plainfield, Windham, CT. In October of 1794 he sold his property in Plainfield and moved to Great Barrington, where he died. His body was returned to Newport where he is buried.

Editors Note: In the DSFC Newsleter, Vol. 6 Issue 3, 15 July, 2009, p. 6-14, I wrote an article outlining part of the Newport, Rhode Island Dunham Family. This interesting family has been hard to trace past the fifth generation in the line of Joseph 5 Dunham (Daniel 4,3 Joseph 2 John 1), Gratia Dunham Mahony Editor.

In the article cited above Joseph 5 Dunham was given the number 199. I will continue to use that number on this page, and will give his children numbers beginning with 200.

189. Isaac 5 Dunham (Daniel 4,3 Joseph 2 John 1) b. in Newport, Newport, RI, say 1743; d. in 1833. He m. Sarah Spooner, daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah (Robinson) Spooner. She was bapt. in Rochester, Plymouth Co. MA, 22 February 1746. Her parents moved to Hardwick, Worcester Co., MA about 1750. Sarah Spooner was b. abt. Feburary 1745/46; d. in Dunham, Quebec, Canada, abt. 1810.

A descendant of Isaac 5 and Sarah (Spooner) Dunham provides the continuation of this line giving the children and some of the grandchildren of Isaac 5 Dunham. From research by descendant Ernie Turner

He was son of Paine and Merium (Bates) Wilcox.

iv. Herman/Heman G. 7 Turner b. in Dunham, 7 August 1811; d. in East Berkshire, Franklin Co. VT, 30 November 1901; m. in Richford, Franklin Co. VT, 19 June 1836, Lucy Cook. She was b. in Dunham, 20 Jan. 1819; d. 4 March 1869. Both are buried in Stone Church Cemetery, Brome, Quebec, Canada.

199. Joseph 5 Dunham (Daniel 4,3 Joseph 2 John 1) b. in Newport, Newport Co., RI, in 1761; d, in Oneida Co., NY, 8 February 1840. The name of his wife has not been found on any records. She is referred to however in the following Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA Church record, which states "Joseph Dunham and wife dismissed 18 September 1808 to Rome, (Oneida,) New York".

Joseph served in the Revolutionary War. The fact that he has a pension application record has helped greatly in tracing his movements and the places where he lived. Work with the church records of Lenox, help to identify and follow his children.

From Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files; “Joseph S12831, RI Line, appl. 12 December 1832 Oneida Co., NY, aged 71, sol. Lived at Brooklyn, CT. at enl. And after the Rev. War sol. Lived at Plainfield, CT for 10 years then moved to Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA, then moved to Rome, Oneida Co., NY, sol. was b. in 1761 at Newport RI and had also enl. at Richmond Town, RI, 6 or 8 surviving children rec’d final payment on 21 Sept. 1842 & were paid to 8 February 1840.”

Joseph 5 Dunham was “of Lenox” in a 1792 land deed, and he was admitted to the church in Lenox, 17 August 1794. Shortly after his admission to the church in Lenox he had his first five children baptized on 2 November 1794. Joseph Dunham and wife were dismissed from the Lenox Church on 18 September 1808 to Rome, NY.

Jeremiah B. Sanderson was a brother of Aretus Train Sanderson. Jeremiah B. Sanderson had married first in 1854 Hellen Maria Southam and they had five children. Aretus Train and Clara M. (Dunham) Sanderson had at least one child, Florence Sanderson, who appears on the 1860 census. After the death of Jeremiah Burton Sanderson on 21 January 1889, in Strongsville, Cuyahoga Co. OH, Clara married third James B. McConnell (1838-1919).
