He and several other garrison soldiers from Fort Massachusetts and Fort Hoosac were early proprietors at Pownal, Bennington, VT, moving there in 1763. He fought in the Revolutionary War (1775-1783); and was one of the heroes of battle of Bennington. On September 24, 1776, he was sent as delegate to Dorset, Bennington, Vt. to organize Vermont as a state. He served as a private from May 19 to June 28, 1779, in Capt. Thomas Sawyer's company of militia raised for the defense of the northern frontiers of the United States, and received £2.19.8. He also served as a private for 67 days from August 16, 1780, in Capt. Eli Noble's company; Major Eben Allen's Detachment, and received £5.3.4 and served as a private for two days in July 1781, under the same command, "as marcher to Saratoga", NY, in the alarm, in Pownal, (signed) T.
