They were parents of four children. He enlisted as a Private on 27 January 1864 in Company G of the 44th Ohio Infantry, it quickly became Company M, 8th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He was then mustered into the Union Army, 44th Ohio Infantry, Company G at Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH,. James was injured at Liberty, VA, captured and taken prisoner at Lynchburg, VA and died as  P.O.W. at Andersonville Prison, Sumter Co., Georgia from diarrhea & dysentery on 01 October 1864.
