He was then mustered into the Union Army, 44th Ohio Infantry, Company G at Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH,. James was injured at Liberty, VA, captured and taken prisoner at Lynchburg, VA and died as P.O.W. at Andersonville Prison, Sumter Co., GA from diarrhea & dysentery on 01 Oct 1864. He is buried at the Andersonville National Historic Site, Macon Co., GA.
