LINE OF RICHARD SINGLETARY

FIRST GENERATION IN AMERICA

1. RICHARD 1 SINGLETARY was born about 1599 in England; [1] d. 25 October 1687 in Haverhill, Essex Co., MA; [2] m. ca. 1639, in Salisbury, Essex Co., MA Susannah Cooke; but this may have been a second marriage. [3] Susannah (Cooke) Singletary died 11 April 1682 in Haverhill, Essex Co., MA. [4]

In "The History of Salem Massachusetts" by Sidney Perley, Vol. I, p. 448; [5] an entry dated September 11, 1637, “William Allen and Richard Singletary were admitted inhabitants.” The footnote to this record states, “Richard Singletary removed to Newbury in 1638, and subsequently lived in Salisbury and Haverhill.”

There are clues that the marriage to Susannah Cooke may have been a second marriage for Richard Singletary. From "The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury" by David W. Hoyt in reference to Richard Singletary is the quote “Goodwife Singletary d. about 1638 or ‘9. She may have been wife of Richard 1.” [6] It is possible that Richard Singletary may have been first married to a woman with the surname of Dunham, and that Jonathan was a product of this marriage. Jonathan may have wished to indicate this by using the alias of Dunham. It should be noted that all of the other sons of Richard Singletary, as well as all of their descendants, continued to use the surname Singletary. The descendants of Jonathan all used the surname Dunham.
