The surname Hamblen is spelled Hamblin, Hamlin, or Hamlen.  I have used HAMBLEN, however the spelling HAMLIN was preferred by the later generations.

LINE OF DEACON JOHN DUNHAM OF PLYMOUTH

THIRD GENERATION IN AMERICA

12. MARY 3 DUNHAM (John 2,1) born say 1642-3; [1] d. 19 April 1715 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA; aged 73 years; [2] buried in Lothrop Hill Cemetery, Barmstable, Find A Grave Memorial 103692158 103692158. Mary married 20 November 1662 JAMES HAMBLEN, Jr., [3] son of James and Anne (--) Hamblen. His will was written 13 September 1717. [4]

The surname Hamblen is spelled Hamblin, Hamlin, or Hamlen. I have used HAMBLEN, however the spelling HAMLIN was preferred by the later generations.

James Hamblen, Sr. was one of the earliest settlers in Barnstable and was living there by the spring of 1639. He lived at Coggin’s Pond near the lot of Governor Hinckley. His son James Hamblen, Jr., resided first on his father’s Coggin’s Pond lot, but by 1702 he had moved further inland to an area bounded on the south west by the great Indian Pond. This area was later known as Hamblen’s Plain.

People from the Cape Cod towns, as well as those from Plymouth Colony were interested in settling on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Two of the children of James and Mary (Dunham) Hamblen moved to Martha’s Vineyard. James Hamblen, Jr. resided in Barnstable until about 1715. Perhaps after the death of his wife Mary, he went to Tisbury to be with his daughter Hope who was living there. His will was written 13 September 1717; and probated 12 August 1718 in Dukes County, Massachusetts.
