THIRD GENERATION IN AMERICA

9. ESTHER 3 DUNHAM (Jonathan 2 Singletary/alias Dunham, Richard 1 Singletary) b. 1659; [1] d. 14 August 1690 in Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ; [2] m. in 1680, SAMUEL SMITH; [3] b. in April 1644 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA; the son of John 1 and Susanna (Hinckley) Smith; d. in 1729 in Woodbridge. Samuel Smith m.2 8 January 1692 in Woodbridge, Elizabeth Pierce. [4]

Because of an interesting connection between two children of John 1 and Susanna (Hinckley) Smith, I want to show all the children of this couple. Note bolded children.

Samuel 2 Smith, who married Esther 3 Dunham, was the first child of John 1 and Susanna (Hinckley) Smith. It is interesting to note that the fourth child of John 1 and Susanna (Hinckley) Smith was Mary 2 Smith. She was born in Barnstable in November 1647. This Mary Smith married 1 March 1679/80 John 3 Dunham, (John 2 , Deacon John 1 Dunham.) This is the Mary (Smith) Dunham who went to Mansfield, Connecticut with her children after the death of her husband John 3 Dunham.

Some comments about John 1 Smith, and his oldest son, Samuel 2 Smith, appear in the following books. From Woodbridge and Vicinity by Joseph W. Dally, p. 28:

“John Smith, from Barnstable, was one of the nine original associates of Woodbridge, New Jersey. He was a millwright and received a total of 512 acres in a land patent granted in 1670.”

From Woodbridge and Vicinity by Joseph W. Dally, p. 37:

“At the first Town Meeting of Woodbridge held on 1 January 1669, John Smith was appointed Constable. Town Meetings were to be held at the house of John Smith until further notice.”

From Woodbridge and Vicinity by Joseph W. Dally, p. 40:

“At the Town meeting on 10 September, 1669 John Smith, the Constable, was elected Moderator, or Chairman.”

From Woodbridge and Vicinity by Joseph W. Dally, p. 42:

In the 4th of January 1670 meeting “John Smith and Samuel Moore were elected Deputies to the General Assembly.”

From Ancestors and Descendants of Lewis Ross Freeman by Patty B. Myers p. 538:

“Samuel Smith was almost as prominent in the town and Colonial affairs as his father had been. In 1709, 1716, and 1718, he was a member of the New Jersey Assembly. Samuel Smith was elected Constable in 1684 and overseer of highways in 1684 and 1688. In 1684 he was specifically appointed to repair highways “for the Middle part of the Towne.”

15. iii. BENJAMIN 4 SMITH, b. 28 January 1687; m. Sarah Shotwell; She was daughter of John2 and Elizabeth (Burton) Shotwell.

This is not a direct Dunham line, but see the marriage of Shubael Smith’s daughter Mary with Jonathan Dunham.

iv. Shubael Smith, b. 2 January 1692/3; d. Woodbridge 31 May 1768: m. May 1716, Prudence 4 Fitz Randolph (Samuel 3 Nathanie2 Edward 1)

Of their children, the oldest Mary Smith, b. 27 December 1716/17; m. Jonathan4 Dunham.
